Hello Friends! I have recently gotten some new earlobe piercings and thought I would share some tips and tricks on how to take care of them! I have my 1st, 2nd, and just got my 3rds pierced on both of my lobes, and I have my cartilage pierced on my left ear!
Cleaning Your Piercing!
Step 1: When cleaning your piercing, you should thoroughly wash your hands, so no bacteria or dirt is transferred to the skin.
Step 2: Spraying the front and back of your piercing with a sterile saline solution is key to keeping the wound clean and free of infection. Some piercing may require you to use a non-woven gauze, to be able to properly reach all the bits of that piercing! Repeating this action 2 to 3 times a day is important, as it keeps everything nice and clean!
Step 3: Rinsing the front, back and surrounding areas with water, to dilute and remove that saline solution residue.
Step 4: Pat dry the area with disposable paper products. Using cloth towels or cotton q-tips, is not suggested when cleaning or drying piercing as it can snag or leave fiber in your piercing. These fibers can lead to irritation and infection!
Reminders for piercings!
When caring for a new piercing it is important to remember that this is a wound! The area does need to be cared for as such or it will leave risk of infections and painful sores! The process of healing is different for everyone as everyone’s body is different! There will be swelling, soreness, and some bleeding during your healing process. Don’t freak out! It is important to remember this is normal, but if it is excessive bleeding or pain then you may need to take the jewelry out and let your piercing close. According to Happy Trails Pediatrics, this could be due to an allergic reaction to jewelry, or poor aftercare.
When you first get your piercing, the piercing will inform you that earlobe piercing may take around 6 to 8 weeks to heal. This is around 2 months, but can take up to 4 to 6 months, especially if you are sensitive or allergic to certain metals. Choosing the correct metal for your ear should be priority! Titanium or solid gold earrings are suggested for piercings as they are hypoallergenic, and the changes of infection or irritation is low.
Another way to not disrupt your healing process is to not sleep directly on your piercings. This can irritate them and cause a lot of pain for your new cool body modifications! According to STUDS, using a travel neck pillow and placing your ear directly in the center is a great way to protect those ears if you are a side sleeper!
